Geeta Kashyap, PhD

Dr. Geeta Kashyap is an academician and researcher investigating the evolving relationships between media, technology, data, and society. Her work frequently engages with the South Asian context, with her background as a first-generation doctoral scholar from India. She has more than seven years of teaching and research experience in Indian higher education institutions, and now contributing from Auckland, New Zealand. Dr. Kashyap’s inquiries address pertinent challenges of our contemporary digital environment.

Her doctoral research at the Central University of Himachal Pradesh is an early and foundational analysis of data journalism practices in India. The PhD work studied data journalism practices, development, methods and techniques of data storytelling in South-Asian context especially India. This scholarly work especially interviewing data journalists is a result of persistence and a passion for searching new.  The data-driven misinformation, the nuances of misinformation, the role of AI in journalism, and the dynamics of digital media inequalities are few domains that she is investigating currently. She is also researching on Caste and newsroom inequalities.

Dr. Kashyap’s contributions to the field are reflected in her publications in reputed international journals, including Journalism Practice, Media Asia, and Asia Pacific Media Educator. She has shared her research at numerous international academic conferences, such as those organized by IAMCR, and her work on “News in Posthuman Era: From Journalism to Journ-AI-lism” received the Best Paper Award. She has also collaborated with BBC, India for a data journalism project on the coverage of sportswomen in Indian media.

As an educator, Dr. Kashyap has designed and delivered undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Data Journalism, Media Research, New Media Studies, Media Literacy, and Indian Polity, teaching diverse students from diverse background students and international students. She was in leadership roles as the Department Coordinator and Convenor of Boards of Studies. She has also been invited as a resource person for Faculty Development Programmes, to deliver lectures on data visualization, data analytics, research ethics, and effective teaching approaches with academic peers.

Recently, she has relocated to Aotearoa New Zealand, Dr. Kashyap’s current research explores how urban populations engage with data-driven political information and the ethical considerations due to emerging digital technologies. Her international experience further shapes her commitment to developing inclusive and globally relevant pedagogy. She actively participates in the academic community through peer review for scholarly journals and engagement with international research networks.
